On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as John Howard Dobson, Alexandra South, Otago, New Zealand. Dobson enlisted for service during World War One from the Diocesan Office, Nelson, New Zealand. He embarked from Port Chalmers, New Zealand for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Dobson joined the Main Body and embarked with the New Zealand Chaplains' Department, Otago Mounted Rifles on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Dobson served for five years and one hundred and fifty-five days in Egypt, Gallipoli and Western Europe. Dobson survived the war and was discharged on 3 February 1920. Dobson died on 6 May 1930 in Lisbon, Portugal.
