Description
Copy of a photograph of a man in military uniform. Thought to be John Hannen (serial number 7/206) in military uniform. Hannen was born on 28 February 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hannen, of Tadmor, Nelson, New Zealand. Hannen was employed as a labourer in Tadmor. He joined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles as a Trooper during World War One and embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand, for Wellington, New Zealand. From Wellington Hannen joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Hannen was killed in action on either 6 or 7 August 1915 in Gallipoli, Turkey. He is remembered on the Chunuk Bair (New Zealand) Memorial, Chunuk Bair Cemetery, at Gallipoli.
