Full length studio portrait of two men in military uniform. Trooper Leonard Edward Berkett (serial no.35758) is the man on the left. Berkett was born on 17 March 1893 in Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs L. Berkett (mother), Hope, Nelson, New Zealand. Berkett worked for himself as a farmer before enlisting for service during World War one. He joined the 22nd Reinforcements Mounted Rifles Brigade and embarked on 15 February 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand for Suez, Egypt. Berkett served for two years and three hundred and fifty-six days in Egypt. Berkett survived the war and was discharged on 9 September 1919. He intended to return to Hope New Zealand. Berkett died on 24 March 1954. The second man is currently unidentified.
