2nd Lieutenant John Edward ALLEN. NZEF Service # 6/2344; Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 4th Reinforcements, NZEF. * Awarded (1) Military Medal (MM) : Published 'London Gazette' on 28 January 1918 and; (2) 'Military Cross' (MC) - published 'London Gazette' - on 1 February 1919. Born 11 July 1887. Brother of Mrs G. Allen - of Port Nelson. Prior to enlistment for war service John Allen was employed as a Farmer - at Flat Creek, Marlborough District. John Allen enlisted for war service on 7 March 1915. He left New Zealand for overseas war service - on 17 April 1915. 2nd Lieutenant John Allen served at Egypt (1915-1916); Gallipoli (1915) and France & Belgium (1916 & 1917 & 1918). 2nd Lieutenant John Allen survived war service and he returned to New Zealand - on 23 June 1919 - aboard HMNZ transport ship 'Maunganui'. 2nd Lieutenant John Allen was discharged from the NZEF on 23 July 1919. Hi this photo is off my g g uncle John Edward Allen born 1887 died 1953. He served with the Canterbury regiment from Gallipoli 1915 then through Western Europe until 1919 finished the war as a 2nd Lieutenant, was awarded the military medal and Military Cross for acts of gallantry. After the war he worked a the mine assayer at Waiuta.
