Private Robert BENSON. NZEF Service # 8/3879 : Private, Otago Infantry Regiment, 14th Company, D. Company, 10th Reinforcements, NZEF. Born 6 September 1893 - at Collingwood, Tasman District. Robert was the son of Mrs Helen Hawkins (formerly Benson) - of Collingwood, Tasman. Brother of Private Joseph Henry BENSON (1894-1916) : NZEF Service # 6/3622; Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 9th Reinforcements, NZEF. Private Joseph Benson served at France (1916). He was killed in action - 22 September 1916 - at the Somme, Armentieres, France. He was 22 years of age. Prior to enlistment for war service Robert Benson was employed as a Labourer - at Collingwood, Tasman District. Robert Benson enlisted for war service - 28 November 1915 - at Trentham Military Training Camp, Wellington District. He was 22 years of age. On 4 March 1916 Private Robert Benson left New Zealand for overseas war service - with the 10th Reinforcements, NZEF - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship either 'Willochra' or 'Tofua', Private Benson served at Egypt (1916) - until he embarked on 13 April 1916 - from Port Said, Egypt aboard HMT 'Kinfaun's Castle' - for war service at France & Belgium. Private Robert Benson served at France (1916) until he was wounded in action - on 23 June 1916 - at France. He was medically evacuated to England - aboard Hospital Ship HS 'St Denis'. At England he was admitted - on 9 September 1916 - to the 2nd (New Zealand) General Hospital - at Walton-On-Thames, England. On 13 November 1916 - at England - Private Robert Benson was invalided to New Zealand - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship 'Navua' - which arrived - on 10 March 1917 - at New Zealand. The same day Private Robert Benson was discharged from the NZEF. He had served overseas - with the NZEF - for 1 year & 106 days.
