Framed photograph of George Augustus Shea who died in Egypt, of meningitis in No. 4 Auxillary Hospital in Cairo, on 11 January 1916. Black and white portrait with an oval mount, in a wooden brown frame with gold inner edge. George was enrolled in the NZEF under the name O'Shea but the reverse of the print also uses the name George Shea.

Private George Augustus O'SHEA (1889-1916). NZEF Service # 10/95; Private, Wellington Infantry Regiment, Main Body, NZEF. Born 5 December 1889 - at Wakefield, Nelson District. Son of Thomas & Mary O'Shea - of Wakefield. Prior to enlistment for war service George O'Shea was a Grocer's Assistant - at Pongaroa, Wairarapa District. George O'Shea enlisted for war service on 17 August 1914 - at Pongaroa, Wairarapa District. He was 25 years of age. Private O'Shea left New Zealand for overseas war service - on 16 October 1914 - with the Main Body NZEF on HMNZ Transport Ship either T7 'Arawa' or T10 'Limerick' - from Port of Wellington. Private O'Shea served at Egypt - and with the ANZAC forces at Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey. Private O'Shea was twice wounded in action at Gallipoli (12 May 1915 & 8 August 1915). Private George A. O'Shea died of disease (cerebro-spinal meningitis) - on 11 January 1916 at the 4th Auxillary Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. He is buried at Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt (Grave ref : M.92).
