Description
Nelson Red Cross Flag used to raise money for the Patriotic Fund during World War I. Face of flag is cream with red cross in centre and backed with silk. The flag is completely covered in embroidered signatures. The signature of the Mayoress J A Harley is at the top centre of the red cross while the signatures of local people including the Mayor C Harley and the logos of local Nelson businesses surround the cross in red thread. The date 3 April 1917 is embroidered on the base of the cross.

The signatures were embroidered by Miss Ewart, the cloth was supplied by Mrs Harley.

The Nelson Evening Mail Jubilee 1866-1916 is commemorated on the flag also.

The auction of the flag was reported in The Colonist (27 April 1917) to have raised 110 pounds.
