The painting is a botanical illustration of part of a shrub with flowers commonly known as Red Kowhai. Several green stalks are depicted with compound leaves. The silvery-green leaflets are small and elliptical, in a pinnate formation. There are clusters of solitary hanging flowers on green pedicels. The red flowers are bilateral with long, curved, pointed petals. Some flowers are depicted as long curved buds. There are leaves and flowers depicted in a wash of greens.

Cloth hanging loop at back.

Handcoloured lithograph on cream paper with card backing. The print is a botanical illustration of part of a shrub with flowers. One branching green stalk is depicted with compound leaves. The leaflets are small and elliptical, in an odd pinnate formation. There are small clusters of solitary hanging flowers on long pedicels. The flowers are bilateral with long, curved, pointed petals, similar in shape to a parrot’s beak. The petals are predominantly white-brown with pink tinges.

The print is titled "Clianthus puniceus (Kowhaingutu - kaka)" and "A shurb with scarlet flowers; now generally cultivated in gardens. A genus of most beautiful plants consisting of an Australian (Sturt's Pea) and a New Zealand species".

To the left of the path is a stand of trees and to the right a sloped grassy area and more trees. There is a double gabled house in the centre of the picture with a lean-to style veranda. The house has a chimney, with smoke. In the background are trees, and sky.

Lithograph with borders and border margins, printed on cream sheet of paper. The print depicts a scene in Collingwood Street from the South circa 1860. A road spands the foreground space. Standing on the road are two figures. Pathways and buildings line both sides of the road. In the background are trees. Distinguishing features include the single vanishing point perspective, and rigidly straight lines of the buildings.

The buildings are named in the bottom margin 'NELSON HOTEL', 'MITRE HOTEL', 'TEMPERENCE HALL', and 'CONDELL'S STORE'.
Also in the bottom margin is 'HODGSON & FRIEND LITH NELSON' and the print is titled 'COLLINGWOOD STREET (from the South)'.

The print is ripped, taped and has many brown spots of foxing.

In the middle-distance is a body of water, with a line running through it from the left, representing the Boulder Bank. In the background is a mountain range. The sky is blue black and has two long white streaks representing the tail of a comet, as well as multiple white spots, representing stars. The painting has a dark palette of colours.

Two green stems are depicted at the top of the composition, branching out and down, with alternate leaves on petioles. The green heart-shaped leaves have pinnate venation with wavy margins. The trumpet-shaped solitary flowers are on long pedicels. The joined white petals extend out from a cone-shaped base, with a long white stigma in the centre. Some flowers are depicted as white and green buds.
