[Conté] drawing in black and white on rectangular sheet of grey paper with white mount, in wood frame, and glass. The drawing depicts a half length portrait of Isabella Harkness née McRae. Her hair is parted in the middle and her headdress frames her face, and covers her head and neck. A white ribbon is tied in a bow under her chin, with the long sash ends extending down her chest. Her shawl-like clothing and hands are sketchily depicted in black.

The drawing is signed 'M. HARKNESS'

Isabella arrived on the ship Mary Ann on 9 February 1842, with her family. Isabella married Mr William Harkness at Pitfure, Waimea South, on 16 August 1849. William Harkness ran the Star and Garter Hotel in Richmond.

Her hair is pulled back in to a bun, with side ringlets. She wears a bodice, low and wide over the shoulders, with bows down the centre front. The sleeves of the bodice have decorative frills. The bodice ends in a deep v-shape below the waist. All highlights are depicted in gold.

In the background are steep hills.
