The painting is marked "NiNA JONES" and "METRosidEROS TOMENtosA". Paper label on front: "Metrosideros tomentosa, the ratas are much interwoven into Maori legends. They belong to the myrtle family, and range in colour from dull crimson to bright ornage, scarlet and white. The one known tree with yellow flowers is protected by act of parliament. Natural size".

The green-brown woody trunk has a series of ridges with a terminal cluster of upward pointing leaves. The leaves consist of numerous narrow pointed leaflets attached to a robust leaf axis. Below the leaves are two flower heads, made up of tiny flowers on fleshy branches. Three studies of flowers with white centres and pink petals can be seen in the bottom left corner. There is cross hatching in a wash of greens and yellows.
