Watercolour painting on rectangular sheet of paper, with border margins at top and sides and a wider border along lower margin, and backing sheet. The painting depicts a view from Church Hill looking east down Nile St. A grassy slope spans the foreground space with small trees and dirt pathways. In the bottom right corner a figure sits on a log next to a standing figure holding a parasol. Parallel with the grassy slope is Trafalgar Square road, and intersecting with it, to the right of centre is Nile street, which recedes into the distance to the base of brown rolling hills. On the left (north) side of nile street is a large building, the house of Doctor Bett enclosed by a fence. Beyond the house is a church or bishops house? Buildings line the right (south) side of the street, some of the houses in the middle-distance have filigree decorations on the gables. There are men and women standing on the road as well as mounted horses and horses and carts. In the background are bare rolling hills and a light cloudy sky.

The painting is signed “Edwin Harris” and along the bottom border margin is written “NILE STREET EAST, TRAFALGAR SQUARE NELSON. NEW ZEALAND. 1876.”

Ink drawing on a square sheet of semi-opaque tracing paper. The drawing is a simplistic line drawing of the layout of early Nelson with named buildings. It has a loose grid formation, with the Cathedral and Cathedral hill top right, with Trafalgar Street running down the length of the paper from the cathedral to the ‘north’ end of the map. The Maitai River curves around and down from top left corner around to the bottom right, intersecting with Trafalgar Street.

Watercolour painting on a rectangular sheet of cream paper with card backing. The painting depicts a semi-rural scene looking north-east up the Maitai Valley. A road, Nile Street East, runs diagonally through the picture from the left corner up to the middle ground. There are hop gardens in the foreground, distinguished by the early growing technique using tripods of stakes. There is a large tree on the right. Behind the tree the Maitai river can be seen on a diagonal up through the picture to the middle-ground. In the background are high hills framing the scene and a cloudy sky. At the point where the road meets the river is a tall bare tree trunk and behind that a tall narrow building. These same reference points are visible in Ref no. AC955. See Ref no. 9913 for a photograph of a hop garden in the Maitai area.

Watercolour painting on rectangular sheet of cream paper with border margins. The image is a scene from the Port looking east across to Nelson city hills. A dirt road spans the foreground space. In the middle ground to the left is a wooden barrel lying on it's side, and further to the right a horse and cart, next to which a woman in a red dress and a man stand. To the left and 'behind' the horse and cart is a two storied building with casement windows, a flag pole on the roof and a street veranda extending over the road supported on posts. On the facade of the veranda is "H.M.CUSTOMS". To the left of the centre of the picture is the mast of a boat. On the right are two double-storied buildings with large shop front casement windows. There are planter boxes on the second stories. On the facade is "SHIP AKERSTEN. CHANDLERS". To the right side of the buildings are a row of wooden barrels and a flagpole and flag. To the extreme right is a steep cliff. In the background is the sea and hill ranges.

In the bottom edge of the window mount is "A VIEW AT THE PORT NELSON NEW ZEALAND"

Two branching green stems are depicted with alternate leaves. The green leaf blades are needle-shaped. At the terminal ends of the stems are solitary flowers. The flowers are white with ovular petals radiating out from white and green centres. Buds are depicted in green and white. There are leaves and flowers depicted in a wash of greens. Thought to be Wahlenbergia.
