Miniature oil painting on an ovular bone/shell, with metal frame and glass. The frame has an eyelet at centre top. The painting depicts a head and shoulders portrait of a man. He is depicted with short grey hair and large grey green eyes. He wears a dark coloured double breasted jacket, white shirt, and a high white necktie and collar that covers his neck up to the chin. On the reverse a lock of hair is encased under glass with a metal border. The hair is gathered at one end by a clasp of gold thread and seed pearls. The lock of hair is then framed by purple faceted glass, and a further metal frame.

A dark cream ribbon, now very degraded was threaded through the centre eyelet.

The green-brown woody trunk has a series of ridges with a terminal cluster of upward pointing leaves. The leaves consist of numerous narrow pointed leaflets attached to a robust leaf axis. Below the leaves are two flower heads, made up of tiny flowers on fleshy branches. Three studies of flowers with white centres and pink petals can be seen in the bottom left corner. There is cross hatching in a wash of greens and yellows.
