Description
A painting by H Hilliard. The Queen Bee ran aground on the night of 6 August 1877, sailing from England, for Nelson. After abandoning ship to a lifeboat and raft some survivors eventually came ashore at Awaroa and others on D'Urville Island where they were assisted by Maori. 4000 Nelson citizens, a band and the Bishop welcomed survivors.

Miniature oil painting on an ovular bone/shell, with metal frame and glass. The frame has an eyelet at centre top through which an orange ribbon is threaded. The painting depicts a head and shoulders portrait of a man. His gaze does not meet the viewer. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a dark coloured double breasted jacket, white shirt, and a high white necktie and collar that covers his neck up to the chin. The background is neutral.

On the reverse a woven lattice of hair is encased under glass. In the middle of the design is a cursive monogram, possibly the letter 'B'. The monogram and the hair is a light brown colour.

Two yellow brown stems are depicted with simple alternate leaves. The green leaf blades are strap-shaped with a prominent, dark midrib. The small flowers are bilateral, with white petals and yellow centres at the terminal ends of the stems in small clusters. There are leaves depicted in a wash of greens and blues.

Several brown-red stems are depicted with alternate leaves on petioles. The green-yellow leaf blades are oval-shaped with toothed margins.
